Grove City, PA – October 29, 2019 – Armstrong conducted the second annual Avenge Hunger Month during September and nearly 220 community feeding programs received resources to help with their mission to fight food insecurity. Avenge Hunger month generated the following resources: 41,616 pounds of food, $12,264 in monetary donations and 93 hours in volunteer time.
Avenge Hunger Month helped to increase awareness of Armstrong’s Breaking Bread initiative to stock local food pantries and soup kitchens for the busy Fall and Winter seasons. Breaking Bread began in 2010, aiming to provide resources for community organizations and other social services that help to feed those in need.
The donations were collected at Armstrong’s 16 local offices located in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky and Maryland, plus the Corporate office and Customer Service Center in Butler, PA.
Avenge Hunger Month was successful due to the involvement of Armstrong employees and community partners who assisted in the gathering donations. Theses partners included schools, community organizations and businesses.
Bree Freehling, Community Marketing Manager, commented that “The original goal of Breaking Bread was to feed the hungry in the communities we live in, work in and provide service. Through Avenge Hunger Month, Armstrong is able to fulfill this goal by providing necessary resources to help stock local food pantries for the holidays and winter season.”
One of the organizations that received food from the Avenge Hunger Month collection was Lakeview Area Helping Hands in Stoneboro, where they serve approximately 90 households, across two rural school districts, every month. Emma Slawson, Client Coordinator, shared “for some of our clients, this is the only food they will receive for the month. Armstrong’s donation of volunteer time in our food warehouse, as well as the physical food donations, were more than we could have hoped for. Thank you for being active in the community!”
Breaking Bread is a year-round initiative. Donations of food or money can be dropped off at any of the 16 local Armstrong offices to benefit those who are struggling with hunger and food insecurity in those communities.
