Are you looking for a fun activity to do at home on this Friday Fun Day? Make a Rube Goldberg machine! Rube Goldberg was an American cartoonist who often drew complex machines made to solve simple problems. So, a Rube Goldberg machine is made using household items to perform a simple task through a complex series of steps. You can find a fantastic example in OK Go’s music video for their song “This Too Shall Pass”. Check it out below:
Of course this machine took months to build, and its probably more messy than you want to clean up. But your Rube Goldberg machine can have any number of steps and accomplish any task you want! You can find a simpler example of a boy feeding his dog with a Rube Goldberg machine here:
So gather whatever household materials you want to use, and put them together to form a chain reaction, which will result in a simple action being done (like ringing a bell, or popping a balloon). Make sure the steps line up, and fine-tune it until everything happens correctly!
All you need is a simple task, some household materials, and creativity. So go out and try your hand at creating a Rube Goldberg machine today! If you do, post it on social media and tag us! @GCChamberPA .
