Give Back Thursday: Help Rake Leaves

Give Back Thursday: Help Rake Leaves
Chamber- Give Back Thursday

On Thursdays we like to offer suggestions of ways people can give back to the community. For this week’s Give Back Thursday suggestion, we offer the idea to Help Rake Leaves!

Fall is a beautiful time with all of the beautiful colors of leaves on the trees. But, those leaves fall to the ground and become a source of work. In Western Pennsylvania, we are very used to raking leaves. A yard with no leaves to rake is nearly impossible to find since leaves blow with the wind and settle wherever they land. People with no trees even end up having leaves that find their way into their yard. While this can be a tedious task that requires our attention, for most it is doable.

For some people, raking leaves can be very difficult to nearly impossible. If they are elderly or have health conditions, raking leaves can be very difficult. For this week’s Give Back Thursday suggestion, we offer the idea to Help Rake Leaves! If you have a neighbor, family member or friend that you know has a difficult time raking leaves, why not help them? It will obviously take some of your time, but the impact will far outweigh the time and effort you spend on the task. You will benefit from the fresh air and cardio workout that inevitably accompanies raking leaves. The person you do this task for, will be so grateful for the unsolicited help! It truly is a win-win!

If you have children or teenagers, this can be the perfect thing to get their help with. To show them firsthand how a little extra hard work can mean the world to someone else, is a priceless lesson. You may even find they enjoy the act of raking leaves. We all know that children love jumping into a pile of leaves, so making it fun can be a part of the allure!

Getting Rid of the Leaves You’ve Raked

If you live in the Borough of Grove City, remember that there are scheduled leaf pickup dates throughout the different wards of the Borough. This is a great opportunity to have the leaves easily removed. Simply rake them to the curb in time for the scheduled pickup. If you miss a leaf pickup time, you can always take them to the Borough’s yard refuse collection site near Hunter’s Farm. Remember, leaf burning is not allowed within the Borough of Grove City. Also, if you live outside of the Borough and leaf burning is permissible, remember there are alternatives to getting rid of leaves. Burning leaves may seem like an easy way to get rid of them, but the smoke it makes is very hard for people with asthma and allergies. Instead, you might think about mulching or composting leaves to break them down for another use.

We hope you will give our Give Back Thursday suggestion some thought and Help Rake Leaves! It is a great way to spread kindness and keep our community looking great!
