Give Back Thursday: Pick Up Litter

Give Back Thursday: Pick Up Litter
Chamber- Give Back Thursday- Uncategorized

Thursdays are the days we offer ideas and ways people can give back to the community. These ideas may include opportunities to financially give back, or they may be ways to give back with your time. This week’s Give Back Thursday suggestion is to Pick Up Litter.

Chances are, when you have been walking on a sidewalk or walking through a parking lot you have seen litter. How many times have you bent down and picked up the litter? Many times, we see litter when we are out and about, but we don’t always stop to pick it up and properly dispose of it. Usually, we are busy and sometimes think it isn’t our responsibility. This week, we offer the idea that we can all help out with this small task so that it doesn’t become a burden or eyesore for our community.

For this week’s Give Back Thursday, we suggest everyone does a little to help keep our community clean and pick up litter. If you are walking and see litter or debris lying about, take a moment and pick it up. Our entire community has been affected in one way or another by the recent pandemic. Many businesses had to temporarily shut down or begin operating in new ways. Some businesses have had to lay off employees, and now are left with a smaller staff to do the work of many. During this time, it is especially important for everyone to help out. If you are walking past a business or through a parking lot and see litter, stop and pick it up. This may help that business more than you realize.

Litter is everyone’s problem!

We all live in a community. It is important for everyone in a community to do their part and help to keep it beautiful. Unsightly garbage and litter can make a beautiful community look less appealing. What might take you a moment and hardly any effort, could have a huge impact. If everyone that saw litter simply stopped and picked it up and properly disposed of it, there would be less chance of litter being a problem.

Rather than look at litter as not your problem, realize that it is everyone’s problem. While you may have never littered in your life, have you ever walked past litter and not picked it up? Litter can be something someone accidentally dropped, or it can be something carelessly thrown on the ground. Either way, it is there and needs picked up. Do you have a moment to spare to pick it up and throw it away?

We challenge everyone to help keep the community clean and pick up litter when you see it. While it may be a simple act, you can also take it a step further. You can actively make an effort to keep an area clean. Take a garbage bag, wear gloves, and pick up any litter you see in an area. You don’t have to officially “Adopt A Highway”, although that is a wonderful program you could participate with, but you can pick an area and clean it up. Perhaps it is your neighborhood, a park, playground, street, or parking lot. If you have seen litter somewhere and thought someone should clean it up….be that someone! It doesn’t have to be laborious, but it could make a difference for the community. Your community is your home. Help keep your community beautiful!
