Grove City, PA – March 13, 2020– For the past decade Armstrong has served as a conduit to route donations to over 200 community feeding programs through their companywide initiative called Breaking Bread. Armstrong customers and employees donate food and money to local Armstrong locations. These resources are provided to community feeding programs to help stock the shelves in local pantries.
Jeff Ross, Armstrong President, stated that, “Hunger is a problem in all of the communities that Armstrong serves. We see the Breaking Bread initiative as a unified focus in helping community feeding programs to have the resources they require to assist our neighbors who are in need.”
Breaking Bread is a four-pronged approach to giving by providing food, money, time, and awareness. In addition to the food and money, Armstrong employees volunteer with community feeding programs. For example, the Grove City Armstrong system sends volunteers to help at three area feeding programs. They have assisted with Thanksgiving distributions at Feed My Sheep Food Pantry in Slippery Rock as well as Lakeview Area Helping Hands in Stoneboro. They also assist Grove City Community Food Pantry with their Stamp Out Hunger food collection.
Most importantly, the Breaking Bread initiative raises awareness about the need for food in the community. Armstrong has donated thousands of branded commercials to promote this need in our communities. This message is communicated to Armstrong customers on Armstrong’s social media platforms, web, and email; as well as via local programming segments on the Armstrong Neighborhood Channel.
In addition to regular monthly collections, Armstrong conducts a concentrated food drive in September for Hunger Action Month, a nationwide push to get people involved to fight the hunger crisis in America. According to the USDA’s 2019 report, more than 37 million people in the United States struggle with hunger. Armstrong calls the September campaign “Avenge Hunger Month.” Over the last two years, the combined total for this focused drive has been 82,447 pounds of food and $25,339 in monetary donations. Armstrong’s Breaking Bread initiative continues to work to help those affected by hunger in the communities where we work and live.
