On Fridays we post something on social media that is either a Fact or is Fiction. People can comment which they think it is before heading here for the correct answer. Here is Friday Fact or Fiction #65!
Today’s Post: The name “Barmore” of Barmore Lake (at Grove City Country Club) came from combining the names of Capt. John P. Barr, owner of the Union Heat and Light Company, and Elmer W. Moore, a Pittsburgh attorney.
Answer: FACT! According to information found on the Grove City Area Historical Society and Museum’s website:
“The Barmore Lake Association was formed for the preservation of fish and game as well as establishing a public park with facilities for skating, boating, trotting, and other sports.
The name ‘Barmore’ came from Capt. John P. Barr, a trustee of the organization, and Elmer W. Moore, a Pittsburgh attorney. Barr was the owner of the Union Heat and Light Company, the natural gas company.
The association purchased sixty-six acres of land in Pine Township.”
This land would eventually become the Grove City Country Club with Barmore Lake still known by the same moniker.
