On Wednesdays, we like to highlight things to do in our area. These may be things you have done before, or they may be things you have never heard of or never thought to do. As always, our suggestions do not have to be done exclusively on Wednesdays. For this week’s What To Do Wednesday, we suggest Historical Markers & Pizza. Interested? Read on for all of the details.
Have you ever wondered what the obelisk shaped figures mounted along South Broad Street are in Grove City? The answer is, they are historical markers! These markers feature bronze plaques on each side of the sandstone obelisk. The bronze markers tell the story of different storefronts from Grove City’s past, people from Grove City’s history, and important facts related to the community. Each plaque features information lovingly composed to help share the story of Grove City. Every obelisk should be treated as a memorial to a person, place or thing. Some actually feature a person’s name with their birth and death year. These historical markers serve as a reminder of what has gone before us and helped shape our community.
Part 1 Of The Plan:
For the first part of this week’s What To Do Wednesday suggestion, we offer the idea of walking the entire length of downtown’s sidewalks (both sides). You can start at Grove City College’s Carnegie Alumni Center in order to not miss the first historical marker. Be sure to read all sides and appreciate the information each marker presents. Continue strolling along and stopping to read the bronze plaques on each historical marker. You may be surprised at the information you will learn. You may find that there is history you didn’t know about Grove City and the people that came before you. Have you ever counted how many historical markers there are? In total, there are 17 of the obelisk historical markers.
Part 2 Of The Plan:
The second part of this week’s What To Do Wednesday suggestion includes food. In case you get hungry along your walk, or once you are finished, you can plan to stop at Coffaro’s Pizza to enjoy some pizza! Located along your walk, you could stop in at lunchtime to enjoy a slice, or you could stop by and place your order to enjoy when your walk is finished. There are benches and tables located nearby where you can enjoy your pizza in lovely Olde Town Grove City. As you eat, you can think about the people and places you have read about and appreciate all that Grove City has had, and will continue to have, to offer.
We hope you enjoy this week’s What To Do Wednesday suggestion of Historical Markers & Pizza!
